Artistic approach

PL POUJOL

” The tree is a language, a bridge between heaven and earth, a memory of time and a breath of fresh air. For decades, my painting has been in dialogue with it, seeking to reveal its essence, capture its energy and translate its metamorphoses.

At first, it was texture: fragments of bark that became abstract territories, sensory imprints marking the wear and tear of time. Using dripping techniques, I tried to capture the erosion, the crumbling, the tension between strength and fragility. The tree then appeared in the form of traces, almost spectral imprints.

Then, from subject, it became medium. Its branches became my brushes, extending my gesture with their own movement. Its ashes, the charred remains of burnt forests, were incorporated into my painting, transforming it into a material of resurgence.

To paint with trees is to accept a co-creation in which nature imposes its own rhythm and imprint. It’s exhuming the invisible, revealing its wounds, scars and silent resistance. It’s abolishing the distance between subject and object, between gesture and material, in a quasi-phenomenological quest for the interdependence between support and living thing.

My approach is part of a broader reflection on the presence of plants in contemporary art. Where some artists document the tree or make it sacred, I seek to reveal its skin and the invisible. Far from a simple mimesis, my painting aspires to an encounter, a tactile dialogue with this living matter, sometimes bruised, always vibrant.

In this way, each of my canvases becomes a fragment of an ecosystem, a suspended memory. It is both relic and metamorphosis, testimony and resurgence. To paint with a tree is ultimately to paint with time, the time that is inscribed in its fibers, in its ashes, in its silences.”

Biography

Pierre-Luc Poujol was born in 1963 in Alès (Cévennes, FRANCE).

In 1984, he began brilliant studies in applied arts, from which he graduated top of his class (first prize in drawing, first prize in perspective, first prize in sketching).

After spending his time between France and the United States for several years, in 2018 he finally set up his workshop in the South of France, near Montpellier.

Influenced by the rural roots of his farming grandfather and lulled by the spiritual environment of his pastor father, Pierre-Luc Poujol develops an early sensitivity to the world and nature around him.

Acclaimed for his work and artistic commitment, he has won numerous prestigious awards. In particular, he was the winner of the international prize awarded by UNESCO for two-thousandth anniversary of the Nativity.

Pierre-Luc Poujol is also keen to forge links with museum institutions. From March 23 to May 26, 2024, he presented “Arborescences”, his new solo exhibition at the Musée Paul Valéry, featuring over 70 paintings and wood sculptures on the theme of trees and forests.

A committed artist, in spring 2022 he will become the first ambassador of the French NGO Coeur de Forêt, for which he will lend his voice and his tools in favor of preserving our biodiversity.

Pierre-Luc Poujol, ambassador of Coeur de Forêt

In the spring of 2022, Pierre-Luc Poujol decided to commit himself to Coeur de Forêt by becoming the first ambassador of this French NGO dedicated to preserving forests and fighting deforestation.

This French association for the preservation of forests and the fight against deforestation has worked in France and internationally to protect and preserve woodland since 2005. It works through international programmes to restore degraded forest ecosystems, to support small-scale producers towards sustainable agriculture and forestry, to develop fair trade channels and to raise awareness among local populations.
